I am not a writer. I simply enjoyed riding my bike on Matsu. The roads that course up and over mountains and the trails that twist and turn through parks and villages all offer wonderful views. These range from vast expanses of sea to intimate encounters with nature to scenes of people going about their daily lives. With so much to offer, any publication promoting Matsu should not only be encouraged but congratulated.
Riding in Matsu is something I miss. The landscape here where I live is rather flat: it lacks the challenge that a climb might offer as well as the thrill of descending from a mountain top. Of course, there is also the traffic that is an ever present risk. This can't be avoided as life in the U.S. is organized around the automobile as the primary means of conveyance from point A to point B.
Biking is often associated with Earth Day. However, bicycling is rather difficult to integrate into one's life on a daily basis, though there are people like Mr. Li and Dr. Yang who take is upon themselves to ride regularly.
Matsu, with its relative seclusion and small population, has the opportunity to implement measures that hold to the ideals of Earth Day: bicycling being only one. Matsu has the opportunity to pick and choose measures appropriate to its circumstances, and avoid the mistakes of others.
Wouldn't it be nice if every day was Earth Day?

我不是常發表網路文章的美國人,但為了95-98年在馬祖騎單車的伙伴們,我以祝福及感恩之心張貼這篇文章。
我在馬祖的三年期間,非常喜欢騎單車,至今念念難忘。四鄉五島的路蜿蜒曲折,爬過山丘,穿過公園和村莊,美妙景觀不斷延伸,我與單車在馬祖自然風光中留下無數美好回憶,這是一個豐富之旅。尤其,浩瀚的海洋令我心曠神怡;樸實真誠的人心更讓人難忘。這樣美好的地方,任何的讚美都不足增添她的天生麗質。
97年6月,我離開馬祖後仍然難忘那裡的單車故事,相較之下,在我現在住的美國俄亥俄州克里夫蘭城是個平坦的地方,它不像馬祖具有寶貝般珍貴的山坡地,所以缺乏單車急衝下坡的興奮,更沒攀爬險坡的挑戰所帶來的快感。美國是個極度依賴汽車作為交通工具的地方,太多的機動車輛也對單車騎士構成騎乘壓力,道路上的風險令人對單車旅行望之卻步;而馬祖相對車輛較少,整條島嶼道路都像單車專用道,是單車客的天堂。
剛過幾天的4月22日是舉世矚目的世界地球日,而象徵節能減碳的單車活動則是最被提倡的重點項目。除了少數人之外,在多山的馬祖,單車很難與每日的生活連結在一起,只能偶而騎一騎;但是,狂熱單車客如李先生與楊醫師等人則很另類,幾乎天天騎單車,力行樂活生活,我要向他們致敬。
馬祖相對偏遠,人口較少,應該更容易保護原有優質的環境,實現地球日的理想,鼓勵居民過低碳生活以減少碳足跡。多騎自行車,多走路,少開車,就是節能減碳的最好方法。簡單過生活,減少能源消耗,降低二氧化碳排放,回收資源物質,省水省電,舉手之勞做環保,馬祖有機會成為環保典範島嶼,居民與遊客共享對個人健康及保護地球都有益的樂活生活型態。
希望每天都是地球日,大家養成保護地球的生活習慣,在日常生活中做環保。最後祝福馬祖的朋友們健康快樂。

還好曹立委爾忠及時伸出援手
才能完成第三年的服務
羅伯老師的中文比一般中國人更好
因為他竟然能看懂廟裡面的中文古文
除了好學不倦之外
也超愛一人騎單車
他沒有真正的女朋友
在馬祖期間的女友就是單車
他給一般人的印象
是內向而童心未泯
經常一個人騎著單車到處逛
有時候還會找到前所未發現的小路
以及新的風景
就是他主要的歡樂源頭
他喜歡逗狗玩
津沙村的小狗
常是他嘻鬧的對象
這些簡單的樂趣
陪他一個人耐住無聊寂寞
在馬祖整整呆了三年六個學期
98年6月回美國後
現在他的新工作與醫療護理有關
因為具有美國註冊護理師的資格
所以在克里夫蘭城附近的兒童醫院工作
兒童與動物一樣
是他較喜歡的工作對象
對人對事
他將繼續維持純真之心
有情有義
如同在馬祖三年的盡心服務

之前沒注意到有這篇討論啊
隨著時代潮流演進,世人越來越尊重象徵"創新與進步"的智慧財產,著作權法令保障的對象也由出資的金主,朝向出力的作者傾斜。所以牛哥的案例一定可以自行保有著作權,剩下的問題只是協商之後,金主願意出資多少,在經濟面向上,出版划不划算。當然經濟面向也不盡然是全部的考量;為了留紀錄,甚至好玩等,都有可能。
世界地球日活動,全球有2億人響應,不過牛哥當日一天內就由台北騎到板橋再到新莊,最後回騎台北,相當夠誠意,有可能名列當天世界上前一萬名最愛地球的人。為什麼呢?因為算一算路程應該有50公里吧,如果是開車,10公里耗用1公升汽油,而1公升汽油燃燒之後會產生2.4公斤二氧化碳,所以50公里要耗用5公升汽油並產生12公斤二氧化碳。牛兄騎單車,短短一天就為地球節"能"減"碳"這麼多,堪稱萬中選一的環保人,佩服佩服。
除此之外,騎單車所省下的油錢,還有健身美體的功效更不在話下。4/22世界地球日,環境與自己雙贏,牛哥賺多了,可喜可賀。
