Richard Suen did “virtually nothing” to help Sands to get Macau license: lawyer

An attorney in representation of Las Vegas Sands Corp. yesterday told the Nevada Supreme Court that Hong Kong businessman Richard Suen “did virtually nothing” to help the casino operator to get a gaming license in Macau, Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
Las Vegas Sands is trying to overturn a previous verdict from May 2008, that awarded Mr Shuen US$43.8 million (MOP350 million) in compensation, plus US$14.8 million in interest.
“There is no evidence that his actions had any effect on the Macau license,” attorney David Frederick told the court. He added that it was Edmund Ho, then chief executive, who allowed for Las Vegas Sands to enter the local market by open the door for the company to get a subconcession.
One of the lawyers involved in the case said that the court could take as long as four months before a decision is rendered.
Mr Suen is seeking compensation for allegedly having arranged a series of meetings in Beijing in July 2001 between Las Vegas Sands executives and high-level Chinese officials. According to Mr Suen, he was promised compensation in case Las Vegas Sands won a gaming license. He claims the Beijing meetings were essential in achieving that goal.
Mr Frederick opposed that view, saying those meetings were not responsible for the company getting the license.
In trial testimony, it was revealed that former Las Vegas Sands President Bill Weidner originally offered Mr Suen US$5 million and 2 percent of the net profits from the company’s Macau casinos in case of success.
In June 2009, Las Vegas Sands paid US$42.5 million to three men for them to drop similar claims of helping the company to obtain its Macau gaming license.
